Justice for Srdjan Bovan

Sunday, December 28, 2008

In February 2008, eight people died when the Lounge Bar in Novi Sad, Serbia was fire bombed. Milos Malešev deliberately started the fire and was sentenced to 12 years.

Srdjan Bovan helped to run the bar, which had been inspected for fire safety, for several years without incident. Despite official inspectors raising no objections to the safety of the venue, the owners have been punished out of all proportion for an arson attack they could not have foreseen, that took away their business, their dreams and eight young lives.

Srdjan Bovan is serving 10 years.

You can add your support to a petition for a retrial at the High Court here: http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/srdjanbovan.

Many thanks

Carpal Tunnel

Had my right hand mended at the end of November and it's healing nicely. Although... I still have one of the stitches in! It was a little tight and has gone underground, which is a little uncomfortable. The consultant surgeon decided to play the latest Iron Maiden CD while his lovely young acolyte performed the operation. You can watch a video here:

I Should Be So Lucky!

New song uploaded on MP3 page. More in progress...

Have a date for the carpal tunnel operation (21st November), so will be out of action for a week or so guitar-wise. Just hope it works as well as the last one. Am actually a little nervous about the procedure for some reason. Odd as I wasn't the first time, mind you that was 3 years ago and my head and body are in different places now.

Main door to the flats is knackered. Some cretinous oiks have partially dismantled the big electro-magnet mechanism. Grrrrrr!!!

Was bereft of the interweb for a fortnight as Virgin decided to upgrade the connection without checking that us subscribers had compatible ADSL2 equipment first! After much wrangling I got a free bit of kit which worked after modification with a pair of pliers so the power supply would fit (honest!), a free month and three discounted months. Not happy that this router is mains powered rather than USB and there seems no way to use the PC offline short of physically pulling the plug! Not a big deal? Well I try to avoid gadgets that burn expensive leccy when I'm not using them and when I'm doing some recording and an automated Anti-Virus or Windows update arrives the Cakewalk software can crash or at best corrupt the track being recorded or edited. Harumph!

Shops have cranked up the heating. Grrrrrr!!!!

Not been feeling too good.

Am a wobbly goblin.

Religious cult obsessives have done my head in.

Tara a bit.

I have this domain hosted for another year, more by inertia than judgement. It seems a trifle redundant after 6 years to pay for a site purely to host my MP3s and an email address in these days of Myspace and iLike (where I've parked 40-odd MP3s for free). Cybertimes change so rapidly! Ah well, now I've paid for it I might as well waffle:
  • Carpal tunnel is playing merry hell with the guitar playing and I have an appointment with a consultant on 16th. My guess is the operation will be in late November. Then I'll have a matching pair of mutilated mits!
  • The cockroach treatments ceased a couple of weeks back. Hurrah!
  • I appeared on BBC Radio4's Case Notes programme on Tuesday of this week, reminiscing about my whopping paracetamol overdose back in the '90s. Helen Sharp, the producer, came up on the train and recorded us having intercourse on my futon. She's actually very good and it feels like a friendly natter rather than a grilling.
  • The birthday was rather shite due to the bank not opening till 10am and the little boy behind the counter at the Superdrug pharmacy. The bank made me late and I picked up some bottles of lovely real ale on 'special' at Sainsburys as a birthday treat, then made the fatal mistake of popping in to Superdrug for my 'owings'. As it was the day after the bank holiday Monday there was a small queue of old age perishers and the prescription collection service had been disrupted. The little imp behind the counter decided to ring up an old dear's surgery to see if her 'repeat' had been collected; off his own bat - the old dear wasn't bothered. Needless to say he was on the phone for a good 10 minutes before getting round to dealing with us. My magic talc was in that morning's delivery and he decided to unpack it and get it bagged and checked and dispensed. I was cutting it fine for my supposedly therapeutic reading group. I lugged my shopping bags out of the Grosvenor Centre and... the left hand bag caught an iron pillar supporting the veranda... an ominous band-cum-smash and a pleasing bouquet of St Peter's ale wafted up from the bright orange bag-for-life. I left an aromatic trail of ale down Fish Street, across the vestibule and in the lift before depositing a bag of broken glass, beer and interesting cheese in the bath tub before giving the lift a good-neighbourly mop, closing the door on the world and unleashing a primal scream of vernacular describing human genitalia and it's generative usage. Harrumph!
  • Currently enjoying D.H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers together with Bernhard Schlink's Flights of Love (for the reading group). Also knocked off and enjoyed Jules Verne's Five Weeks in a Balloon/Around The World in Eighty Days and Albert Camus' The Plague.

That's all folks!

Look after yer elves!

Why...

Saturday, August 02, 2008

  • Are the ladies at the Post Office so unhappy in their work?
  • Are Bibles expensive?
  • Doesn't Northampton Central Library sell bookmarks?
  • Is Gordon Brown the only guy that won't be reshuffled?
  • Doesn't Brie have a 'Best After' date?

Just wondering.
