Hobgoblins Broke My Saucepan

Sunday, February 03, 2008

Serves me right for relying on second hand saucepans that were brother C's wedding pressies a quarter of a century ago. I've got through a fair bit of kitchenalia over the last two decades due to being the bloke that loses his stuff at the end of relationships. Good job the handle dropped off (well actually the saucepan generally drops off the handle in my experience) on emergence from the sink rather than sprout-laden from the cooker.

Oscar Wilde left me luke-warm. I was however intrigued in a spooky coincidence way that he refers to Petronius' 'Satyricon' which I plunged into last night. In between I had something of a dissappointment with Henry Fielding's 'Jonathan Wild'. I should have remembered he was from the moralising school. No bawdy fun allowed if balanced with a dose of preaching. Thankfully there was included a short, anonymous account (possibly by Defoe) which was some consolation.

Satyricon is a top romp! A satire on Roman society around the time of Nero, complete with comedy anal rapes of our hero by a religious sect he inadvertently offended, and a marathon feast lasting days. The translation is very modern (1997) so doesn't shy away from explicit humour and slang which may well have been lacking from C.18th-19th versions.

btw, my favourite piece of C.18th cant is currently... "My arse in a bandbox!"

Just thought I'd mention it.

Ciao fer now
