Infective Otitis Externa

Saturday, October 22, 2005

Ear infection. It hurts. I'm partially deaf. I said I'm partially deaf!!! Deaf in the left ear all the time. Sporadic stabs of pain periodically. Annoyingly at beddy-byes. Swollen all around the outer ear. This adds to my general malaise which was upped by the frumpy OT earlier this week (will post separately) and my horror as to the £114 DD Powergen took this month! Fuck me! I'm single! i don't use the heating! I hardly use the washing machine! WTF! Have to investigate... Seems kicking against 'them' is the only way I'll survive. Yay for my punk roots! Boo to not being an accountancy-phile Duranny. Ho-hum, said Pooh.

btw Englisch versions of Bowie! et al

I Have a Dream

Friday, October 21, 2005

I have lots of dreams actually. Dream in question was Motorhead in caberet. For some reason I had a few hours to kill one evening and ended up gatecrashing a school's end of term bash at which Motorhead were the entertainment. There seemed to be a fair amount of magic involved such as levitation (I was dragged up on stage to participate at one point). In addition I recall a fair amount of acrobatic goonery on behalf of Mr Kilminster. Bloody weird but entertaining. I could see the band going into this area...

Name That Lyric!

Saturday, October 15, 2005

"Well I blest my soul What wrong with myself? They are itch similar a stiff on a velvety mast". It's been through Intertrans and back. Find out what it is here.
Intertrans kills me! Especially the usage of English phrases such as "kick the bucket" rotflol! I started doing this a couple of years back with Babelfish and in a fit of boredom did some more today. Mainly via Italian but will be doing the Germanic thing too...
Got the webcam sorted today so I'm wired for sound and vision once more.

ps just found out there's another Lou Reed DVD out on 1st November. It's from the 2000 Ecstacy tour. Hope they're lining one up from '96...

I love my Telecaster

Friday, October 14, 2005

A whole morning spent fiddling with settings, uninstalling, installing, re-installing in varying order finally resulted in Cakewalk getting a realistic input signal on the Soundblaster card and the mic picking up more than just the equivalent of a Motorhead gig with one's head in the bass bins! Hoorah! To try the inputs I hooked up the Telecaster through the Marshall combo into the soundblaster "line in" and got a signal!!! I remain amazed at the playability of the Tele. I always thought the Epiphone Les Paul Special was good but, admittedly with light .10 gauge strings, the Tele beats it all hands down! Chord changes and whizzing up and down the neck seem more natural and stuff that previously seemed difficult, verging on the impossible are achieved! Hoorah again! I reckon a large part of this is that the polyurethane/lacquer (whatever) on the other necks creates too much friction with my notoriously sweaty mits, whereas the Tele is a maple neck. Ok, I'll shut up.
Ex is annoying. Left a message about not sleeping cuz she worries about moi. So I stay up last evening especially to call her. Seems she's changed her landline number or blocked me! Charming! Wish she'd just butt-out of my life completely if I'm not even to be accorded the courtesy bestowed on a run-of-the-mill, once a year type friend. Not wishing to harp on but it's no real wonder that going from engaged and 'soul mate' to 'make an appointment on neutral territory' / 'sms only' / 'call barred', within days is rather distressing. Great for one's self esteem. Hey, I must be a nasty, violent, unstable, uncaring animal! Yay for me!

Have a good weekend y'all,

Bleeding Soundblaster!

Thursday, October 13, 2005

Why, oh why did I bother to get a Soundblaster card in this PC? Far from plugging the guitar stuff in and getting creative I just wanted to use a mic in conjunction with CW Guitartracks to record some voice... Moses on a moped!!! First off the Logitech Quickcam had overridden all the input settings on CWGT, thus the only input device available was the integral mic on the cam. Ok, an hour or so later that's sorted after much re-installing and twiddling. Next off, and currently, try as I might the mic input is so lame it's useless! No volume whatsoever! Ok, next stop is to try the guitar "lined in" with and without an amp. Maybe I should just rip the fucking thing out completely.
Andy. Pissed off. Over and out.

edit----- Oh and another thing. Northampton Borough Council, recognised as the worst in the land by HM Government. Not surprising really. The annual St Crispin Fair (loads of rides in a pedestrianised area) has finally been cancelled... less than two weeks before the due date! The annual firework bonanza is apparently going to be huge... but on Sun 6th Nov as they left it too late to order the pyrotechnics for 5th (i.e. this week). Twats. Especially as this means two days of explosive bollocks instead of one. Still can't get the audio inputs working. Ex wants to know if I'm ok (alive), dunno whether to call or not. Buggeration. Probably shave hair off later if I can be arsed. Hoorah for my "good level of functioning" rotflol.

God Botherers

Saturday, October 08, 2005

Britain must be religiously tolerant in the extreme. Ok, tolerant of christianity. As a chap who lives in the centre of Northampton (right in the centre), I'm regularly bombarded by chaps bawling about hell-fire, guilt and how they are generally better than everyone else. I can do without both an extra guilt-trip and aggressive, shouty proselytising on a day when it's taken me perhaps 5 hours to even venture out of the door. Just how these guys are allowed to be quite so offensive both in content and presentation is beyond me. Oh and don't even get me started on the christian rappers. Frightens me, let alone the children! Mind you the(?) bible's pretty confusing, on one hand seeming to suggest that one shouldn't hide one's light under the proverbial bushel and on the other knocking the scribes and pharisees for publicly flouting their supposed devotions. Buggered if I can make any sense out of it. Just wish they'd shut the fuck up!

The Etymology of Sonic Hospital

Sunday, October 02, 2005

Sonic Hospital was primarily a nome de plume for my recorded output and was coined in the mid '90s whilst i was on invalidity benefit, living in a flat in Wood End, one of the dodgiest council estates in Coventry. There was a chap i knew called Bob; a 40-something hippie type with a weed and folky/prog habit. One night i was over at his getting righteously stoned in a happy way, playing old vinyl albums by Henry Cow and others when on came a blues album that blew me away! Upon enquiring as to the artist i was informed that it was by a chap called Sonny Huxtable (or something), but to my stoned ears it sounded like Sonic hospital, which i found both profound and hilarious in equal measure. (you do when you're wrecked, right?) I wandered home accross the fields covered in morning dew on the morning of my birthday (for it was so) and in order not to forget I tattooed Sonic Hospital on my right forearm!
As my songwriting/recording has always been something of a therapy Sonic Hospital seemed apt. If I look back over the 20 years of recordings it provides some sort of aural history into my mental state, beliefs and environment. Maybe it's the same for graphic artists (is that an acceptable description Chrissie?), writers, designers etc? My money is on "yes".
So there you have it.
I've been picking up the guitars more often of late and the left hand is slowly regaining strength after the carpal tunnel op (still struggling with ring and little fingers) although some alternate fingering and altered technique is still required; this could be construed as a positive thing to spur a fresh creative direction. Who knows? Hopefully get going on the old Cakewalk GuitarTracks once more in the near future.
